Polo Club - Shouldn't Let Him Out

One of the first blogs to appear in this website was about an electro-hip hop act from Melbourne who'd just released a mix-tape in the lead up to their debut album. Polo-Club's mix tape was a bit of a sprawling affair, but it was free and fun. At the time MTV and Triple J had recognised them as kids with huge potential but they weren't exactly packing out their midweek Melbourne gigs or the Parklife Opening slots that they were playing.

Well, Polo Club's debut album 'The 13' came out 6 months ago now. It got a fair spin on triple J and some quality reviews but MC Urban Monk's sometimes obtuse (but always interesting) delivery combined with Camelot The Chameleon's quirky but (supremely musical) production was never going to win over the same 'Oz Hip Hop' crowds that pack out a Bliss n Esso gig at Festival Hall. There's some real subtlety in Polo Club's music. It's undeniably rad but you've got to give it a chance. There's no one making hip hop like this in Australia!

Polo Club are building slowly, they're in the midst of an epic 7 week national tour with Horrorshow and Urthboy and they've been slaying hip hop afficionados left right and centre. This clip is typical of their music. Subtle, interesting, charming and quite frankly awesome. A ballsy Queen sample, some moments of sparkling synth mastery and a bunch of weird dancers... it's beguiling and subversive in it's goodness. I lbve it!
