If Hugh Hefner had a Halloween nightmare it would look like this. It's yucky. Half rocky horror show, half year 9 science dissection and half penthouse mansion (3 halves? yep. you read it!)..
Super Melody is the nom-de-plume of James Cecil, formerly of Architecture In Helsinki, and currently part of the exceptional (and AIR Award Nominated) electronica act Qua. I met him at an experimental gig in Newcastle, he'd spent the night before playing with Qua and was chilling out watching one of the weirdest nights of music you're likely to see. It was part of the This Is Not Art Festival. The guy was a sweetheart but I wasn't aware that that beneath his harmless exterior, there lurked the ability to write songs that could be wedged deep into my scull. Like a hatchet. Deep into the bit that makes decisions about dancing and singing along.
James has spent the last year in the studio, writing and producing the debut Super Melody album, entitled "Destination Unknown". Not surprisingly it's an album of pop songs, and one to dance to. But pigeon-holing it further may prove tricky - Super Melody's rhythmic fascination leads the listener from Melbourne to Mumbai, flits from Paris to New York, and then takes them on a slow cruise home, collecting souvenir maracas from a dozen island hotel bars along the way. Its a sophisticated kind of fun, and these songs will stick with you long after your suntan has faded. The debut Super Melody EP Life Is Like Glass is out through Love + Mercy Records.
