Wanna know what an undervalued and underrated genre is? Surf Rock.
Why doesn't surf rock hit the big time? It makes you wanna dance, it's synonymous with good times, it requires excellent musicianship and it's oh so cool. It mystifies me!
Oh well, perhaps the musicians behind this clip will signal a change in the fortunes of surf rock. The band is called "The Break" and is the result of a joining of forces of two little bands called Midnight Oil and The Violent Femmes. Heard of 'em?
Rob Hirst and guitarists Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie for The Oils have joined forces with Brian Ritchie of The Violent Femmes (now living in Tasmania) to breathe new life into instrumental boogie surf rock. I'm pretty excited about it. I mean, i love instrumental rock, I love to boogie, I love to surf and I love Midnight Oil... (The Violent Femmes? well, they're not Australian and not indie so I can't comment, plus i'm not that keen on standing drummers) it's like the stars aligned to place one of my favorite bands right in my lap!
I hope you love it too... here's a taste. Understated and sooooo cool.
